LC Library Events for February 2018

Wyoming, ON – Lambton County Library offers outstanding online learning resources for kids! PebbleGo is an award winning pre-K to grade 2 database for reading and research. Early World of Learning uses narrated stories, print and do exercises and games to engage kids and make learning fun. TumbleBookLibrary is a collection of interactive stories, games, puzzles and more for kids of all ages. French and Spanish books are also available. Muzzy Club is a language learning course featuring animated characters, stories, games and more! Find these digital resources and more at www.lclibrary.ca under eLibrary and eResources. A library card is required to access.

The 6th Annual Spread the Words event is currently underway. Authors featured this year are the late Amy Krouse Rosenthal, for children ages 8 and under, and Avi, an author for older children. Books listed on the Freedom to Read Challenged Book List are also included. The event, which also takes in World Read-Aloud Day, on February 1, finishes on the last day of Freedom to Read Week, Saturday, March 3. Participants have an opportunity to win prizes by entering their name in a draw for each book read independently or together as a family. Entries can be submitted through the library's website at www.lclibrary.ca or by filling out a ballot at your local branch library.

Please pre-register for all programs except those specified as a drop-in by contacting the individual library. Preschool programs requiring registration are currently underway; however, some branches offer the programs as drop-ins and welcome all participants.

  • Weather Bomb 1913 Lecture and Book signing with author Bruce Kemp (All Ages) Pre-register - 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 13. In early November 1913, a rare 'white hurricane' tore across the Great Lakes, delivering devastating snowfalls, paralyzing communications and killing 256 people on a dozen of the freshwater seas’ largest ships. Bruce Kemp researched this lively and detailed account by interviewing the last surviving witnesses and combing through courtroom testimony and newspaper reports.

  • Blind Date with a Book (Adult) Drop-in - Check out your 'date' from the display in the library from February 8-15th. Each book will be wrapped so you won't know the title or author, but it will have a brief description. Take it home, unwrap it, read it and enjoy. Hopefully, it's love at first sight!
  • Electric Library (Adult) Drop-in - 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10. Meets in the West Room. This is an opportunity to have device-related questions answered. Children are also invited to bring along small, broken or unwanted toys and stuffed animals to donate to Heaven's Wildlife Rescue. The rescue animals stay active by playing with the toys.
